This studio has been a home to a community of movement based arts for more than 50 years. It began as a dance studio but has seen many different teachings over time. People from different walks have all shared the communal room in good spirit and positivity. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers used to practice their dance routines here. Carlos Castaneda led his shamanic Tensegrity workshops in this space. The longest running weekly Contact Improv group still meets here every Sunday.

In the mid-90's, Bryan Kest brought donation-based yoga to this room. At first he was the only one, but over the last 20 years many more have come. One at a time, the space has been populated with very talented and dedicated yoga teachers. Bryan Kest is our pioneer and without him Power Yoga would not be where it is today. Our studio is now a collective of instructors, each with years of experience and training to facilitate the optimal yoga practice that works best for you. Over the years, thousands of students have come to our room "above Radio Shack" and found the freedom, energy and vitality that yoga can provide.

Power Yoga is a community of teachers that offers yoga classes on a donation basis. We believe that by giving freely to anyone that needs it, the universe will give back enough to keep us all afloat. Health and wellness should be available to everyone in this world, but it must be noted that donation does not mean free. It simply means that if you cannot afford the suggested cost of $15, then pay what you can.

Now come and allow your practice to flourish in this unique and special studio.

Ali’s classes are taught in a Vinyasa style, connecting each movement with the breath in a continuous flow sequence. This allows the breath to release tight muscles as well as stretch and strengthen areas of your body for greater health and mobility. The intention of each class is to bring you more present and into the moment. Her classes are heavily influenced by her extensive dance training and other accredited yoga instructors in the community.
For me, yoga means moving consciously through life, and making decisions that are evolutionary. It means dancing through every element of life, and recognizing every event as your teacher. I have been practicing yoga for over ten years and have been teaching for eight. I have studied Bikram, Ashtanga, Kundalini and Bhakti yoga, and combine some of these styles in my practice. My style of power yoga combines intensively physical, psychological and spiritual elements.

It is a special honor to teach at Power Yoga East; since this is the studio that I wondered into September 13th, 2001 for my first yoga class ever. For me it is coming home in Jai (Victory). Thank you to all the Power Yoga family for your encouragement, mentorship and love; in a nutshell for having accepted me into the PY community. For this, I will be forever grateful.

Yoga has dramatically improved my physical wellness and has helped me develop a strong mental and emotional stability. Anyone coming in to practice will experience an increase mental and physical awareness and well-being. Practitioners will also slow the process of aging by increasing their cardiovascular health, decreasing toxicity and stagnation in the body and improving the functions of the 5 major systems of the body. I hope to heal you soon.
Dan Ward has been teaching thoughtful and creative vinyasa yoga for the last 6 years in Santa Monica. His classes, retreats and teacher trainings are always a fun and educational experience. In addition to being a well respected and sought after yoga instructor, he is a father of 4 beautiful girls. Come sweat.

I make an effort to teach every yoga session with enough care and compassion so that everyone gets something out of each class. I also try to be as informative and articulate as possible during the entire session so people with a developed practice as well as beginners all receive something positive and beneficial. My overall goal in Yoga, is to help everyone to love and accept who he or she is, which is very challenging in this western society we live in.
Known for her creative vinyasa sequencing and pranayama, Michelle Goldstein’s teaching integrates influences from various forms of movement and meditation set to powerfully inspiring backdrops of music. Approaching instruction with a deep reverence for the sacredness of yoga coupled with a joyous sense of humor, Michelle’s classes offer a safe, nurturing and challenging environment for students to come and explore their mental and physical boundaries. Michelle leads workshops, immersions & retreats worldwide as well as teaching at Power Yoga East and Equinox. She has studied with many inspiring teachers, among them Bryan Kest, Annie Carpenter, Max Strom, Jerome Mercier and Erich Schiffman.

Each practice with Rudy is an adventure but the result is always the same, elation from meeting a challenge head on that helps create a strong and resilient physique and mind. Armed with a huge heart, wicked sense of humor, and fierce belief in the practice, Rudy’s enthusiasm for yoga shines through in every class helping each of his students to become a yoga warrior themselves.

I teach a strong power yoga class focusing on mindful movement and breath. With an emphasis on proper technique and alignment I will lead you safely through a sequence of postures designed to challenge all levels, while reminding you to breathe deep and listen intently to your body for guidance so that each class becomes a very personal journey into self awareness and meditation, with the intention that after the class you leave feeling a lot calmer stronger and healthier than when you walked in.
Toni Divincenzo has been profoundly moved and forever changed by the donation-based yoga philosophy. It is where her story began and has come full circle. The theme of her class is empowerment and self discovery; a sacred time assessing personal will and power. The sequencing of asana and cultivation of the breath are designed to stoke the fire within, igniting strength and action. So show up on your mat and fire it up!

My vinyasa flow style classes are strong and demanding, linking breath and movement through a dexterous sequence of sun salutations and postures. The continuous flow deepens breathing, increases endurance, and will allow you to test the edge of your balance and flexibility. I often include advanced postures such as handstands, arm balances or backbends.
